THE LOVER

Neherenia
In the fifth and final season, Usagi lost Mamoru when he fell victim to Neherenia's curse. She even followed him into Neherenia's castle. She had a hard time because the journey was long and treacherous (Neherenia set up traps and surrounded her fortress with thorny vines). Usagi was able to heal Mamoru by being compassionate to the "evil" queen. When she realized that Neherenia was really lonely and hurting, Usagi gathered positive energy so that the other woman could start anew. By doing so, she was able to break the spell that Neherenia placed upon Mamoru and release everyone from their mirror prisons. Because Mamoru was healed, Chibimoon was able to return. (She vanished earlier because Mamoru "forgot" about his past, present, and future with Usagi. If Mamoru and Usagi weren't together as a couple, then naturally, Chibiusa wouldn't exist.)

Kou Seiya
When Mamoru left for America to continue his studies there, Seiya somewhat filled the role of Usagi's love interest. Like Mamoru, he was obnoxious towards Usagi at first. But as the season progressed, he fell in love with her. His feelings weren't returned though as Usagi only had eyes for her dear Mamo-chan. You see, Usagi never knew (or perhaps she had an inkling but ignored it) that Seiya had fallen in love with her.

Seiya first saw Usagi at the airport while he was trying to get away from his and the rest of the Three Lights' hoard of rabid fans. Usagi didn't notice him as she was too absorbed in seeing Mamoru "off with a smile." The next day (or that same day), they met again. Usagi wanted to snoop around a closed set so that she could meet an idol. Unfortunately, Seiya was lounging on a bench nearby and foiled her plan. Their third encounter happened when he bumped onto her on the street. He was surprised because, instead of fawning over him, she just got mad at him. They met again when he and the other Lights transferred to her school. Seiya had taken an interest to her and he showed this by bugging her in and out of class.

Usagi didn't like Seiya at first since she thought he was a total jerk. However, the more they spent time with each other and because her girlfriends became upset whenever she was rude to him, she started to consider him her friend. And when that friendship was threatened, Usagi did her best to save it. In episode 187, when Sonoko, the head of the Three Lights' fanclub, demanded that Seiya stop hanging out with Usagi, both Seiya and Usagi became naturally indignant. Sonoko then challenged Usagi to a game of softball. If Usagi lost, then she couldn't hang out with Seiya anymore. Though Usagi wasn't really good in sports, she did her best to win. And she did, thanks in part to Seiya's coaching. Also, she gained a new friend: Sonoko!

Usagi, her girlfriends, and the Three Lights finally found out about each other's secret identities in episode 188. There was animosity mostly because the Starlights felt that they were betrayed. Not only that, the war against Galaxia was getting worse. Their princess, Kakyuu, hadn't been found yet. Starfighter did feel conflicted: she knew that she needed to concentrate on finding Kakyuu and the Light of Hope, but she couldn't just ignore her, or rather Seiya's, feelings for Usagi.

Seiya's feelings for Usagi were no light matter. In fact, in the following episode, he got extremely hurt after shielding Eternal Sailor Moon from Tin Nyanko's attack. From then on, Starmaker and Starhealer became actively hostile (as in totally rude) toward Usagi and her friends. For example, they wouldn't let Usagi get in touch with Seiya even if she only wanted to ask how he was feeling. Things became even more tense when the Outer Senshi stepped in. They were concerned that Usagi would get hurt in the process so they forbade her not to see Seiya anymore. Usagi, being a concerned and caring person that she was, still tried to contact him though. Seiya, not heeding his friends' and the Outer Senshi's warnings, tried to see/talk to/be with her as well. In one of the Three Lights' concerts, he finally told Usagi about what happened to him, his fellow Starlights, his princess, and his planet.

When Kakyuu revealed herself, Seiya was torn. As Starfighter, her own princess was her top priority, and yet as Seiya, he couldn't help but still be drawn to Usagi. He thought about her a lot. In episode 194, Usagi, after another attempt on her life by Tin Nyanko on the school rooftop, broke down because she missed Mamoru so much. Seiya, who hurled the red rose which Usagi thought was a sign that Mamoru finally came, kneeled in front of her and asked if he wasn't good enough for her over and over again.

As you know, Mamoru and Usagi were the main couple, the destined lovers, in this series so Seiya clearly had no chance. In episode 197, Eternal Sailor Moon discovered that Galaxia had Mamoru's starseed in her possession. She was crushed. No wonder she hadn't heard from Mamoru for a long time; he died! So anyway, when a stark-naked and winged Moon managed to heal Galaxia in the final episode, all those who perished, Mamoru and her friends included, were reborn. Moon was so elated that she hugged him even though he was fully armoured (he was wearing Endymion's clothes) and even though he was carrying Chibichibi!

Oh yeah, if you're a fan of the Mamoru x Usagi x Seiya love triangle, would you consider joining the fanlisting? Pretty please?

True Love
Usagi was quite insecure of her relationship with Mamoru. She thought that she didn't deserve him. Mamoru, after all, was smart, calm, sophisticated... everything that she wasn't. That was why she kept asking her friends to impart their wisdom (eg: how to learn Genetic Engineering, how to wear kimono, how to cook, how to speak English) on her. Of course, her friends thought that she'd just slack off or that she was just being whimsical, so when she asked them again, they left in a hurry (episode 93).

Usagi wanted to show that she was worthy of his love. She tried to bake him cookies, but they ended up getting burnt (episode 93). She tried to learn how to play the violin, but she just ended up making people cringe (episode 93). She tried to learn English so that she could socialize with Mamoru's friends, but she ended up getting drunk (episode 108). Do you know what reassured her that he did indeed love her? He gave her a duplicate key to his apartment (episode 169) ^___________^;;
